Disarm The Settlers

Thursday, December 15th, 2011

Once upon a time there was an idea to do a short-run split 7″ vinyl series that featured cover songs of some of the artists we love and adore. The series will be known from here on out as Disarm The Settlers, and the time is now upon us to share our very first volume. In typical Five Three Dial Tone fashion, there will be shows to celebrate these little bundles of joy, and those shows will offer limited edition versions of said bundles of joy. That’s good news for you.

Volume I of Disarm The Settlers will feature Ryan Allen & His Extra Arms along with The Kickstand Band each tackeling a pair of tracks from Dayton, Ohio‘s Guided By Voices. Funny enough, we’re doing a little label showcase type thing this coming Friday, December 16th in Dayton, Ohio. That bill will feature Detroit’s Phantasmagoria and Illy Mack, along with our label newcomers from DaytonAstro Fang. 937 sweethearts, Roley Yuma round out the bill and fun will be had by all at Blind Bob’s. Doors at 8pm. 21+. $5.00.

This show will serve as the Dayton release party for Disarm The Settlers Vol. I, while Detroit‘s release party will be on January 14th at UHF Records in Royal Oak, MI.  The vinyl itself will feature 50 special editions, with alternate artwork and hand collaged center labels, neatly numbered and sealed with a kiss. There will be 25 DAYTON versions with cover style 1, 25 DETROIT versions with cover style 2, and all 50 will have hand collaged center labels. The records themselves are a beautiful green that ranges from seafoam to army. Immediately following the January 14th release party, any leftover special edition records will be used the fill orders and the standard version will also become available for purchase.

We’ve done this before. The last time we separated special editions between The Gem City and The Motor City, a crazy thing happened…people in Dayton wanted the Detroit version, and people in Detroit wanted the Dayton version. Your complaints did not fall on deaf ears my friends. Let’s break it down!

News Item!

Monday, September 19th, 2011

Our fellow Detroiters-Of-Interest, Electric Six, have released a new album entitled Heartbeats and Brainwaves. While this officially has nothing to do with Five Three Dial Tone Records, please continue reading and be amazed at how we will take any opportunity to associate ourselves with successful people.

Metropolis Records will release Heartbeats and Brainwaves on October 11. If you don’t want to wait until then, you can purchase your copy now at any of the Electric Six shows listed here. To compliment the new album, Electric Six has self-released a limited edition tour-only 7″ vinyl. This 7″ contains two songs from Heartbeats and Brainwaves remixed.
A: Interchangeable Knife (Dubai Bros. Remix)
B: French Bacon (Phantasmagoria Remix)

That’s right! Your new favorite band, Phantasmagoria, has remixed an Electric Six song, which is available on vinyl and you must own it immediately. And if that wasn’t enough to make any Five Three Dial Tone fanboy squeal with delight, the flipside is a remix of one of the three songs on Heartbeats and Brainwaves that Lettercamp front-woman, Liz Wittman, lends her vocals to. If you strain your imagination, this is like a Lettercamp / Phantasmagoria split 7″, even though in reality it’s nothing like that at all and we should probably be scolded for even suggesting you think about it like that.

The point of all this is we want to keep you updated on artists we’ve worked with. We hope you’ve enjoyed the music we’ve released from them and we hope that you follow them wherever they may be doing music and stuff. We also hope you make it to an Electric Six show soon because only 300 copies of this 7″ exist. Godspeed.

We’re pleased to announce that songs from THREE of our releases have been included in the latest Substream Likes compilation: Deastro‘s “Spritle”, Lettercamp‘s “I Know” and Illy Mack‘s “Squirrels”. Substream is an indie-electro pop label from Gothenburg, Sweden. Among other things, they are the label that will be releasing Lettercamp‘s next single and album in Europe, as well as the European Edition of Lettercamp‘s debut, Raccoon Panda.

These are exciting times. As you all know, Detroit is the Sweden of the Midwest. Five Three Dial Tone Records is happy to be able to bridge the gap across whatever lake it is that separates us from nicer places — places such as Sweden and those other two. In time, transdimensional partnerships like the one Five Three Dial Tone Records and Substream have hammered out will help make Detroit part of the global economy once again. We will unite the world with our music. We will build a more integrated global political and economic structure. We will bring order to the world. It will be a New World with a New Order  – or ”NWO,” if you will.

We can only succeed in creating this NWO with your help and the help of your dollars. Spend them. Spend them on Five Three Dial Tones. Spend them on Substreams. You must put your faiths in our musics. You must act quickly and you must be brave, for no one will be able to survive this Brave New World without our complete discographies.

Substream Likes Vol 2 is released September 23, but we invite you to preview all of the tracks right now:

For anyone wondering what happened to the Dream Affair 7″ and cassette, the band has signed to AVANT! Records and will be using both “405″ and “Open The Door” as tracks on their upcoming full-length LP. Be sure to check that out when it’s released later this year.

Next up on Five Three Dial Tone Records, we have a 7″ and cassette from Phantasmagoria. If you’re unfamiliar with Chris and Lianna and the electronic psychedelic pop sound they’re responsible for, check out the Metro Times cover story and their Bandcamp page. We’re super excited about this and we’ll have more details about the release and the release show in the coming weeks. In preparation, just make sure you have some free space set aside in the Glow-In-The-Dark section of your vinyl collection.
